Art of Development: Planning for the Next Cycle
In this exciting Art of Development Series, YLG presents a program reflecting on the current real estate environment and discussing strategies for “Planning for the Next Cycle”. A cross-disciplinary panel will examine lessons learned during the last downturn, and how those lessons might be applied in today’s environment. Moderated by Clare De Briere (Skanska), the discussion will cover acquisition, capital markets, macroeconomics, investment strategy, portfolio management and development. Panelists may share what measures they are currently taking to mitigate downside risk in their own portfolios & projects.
Each panelist will offer a unique perspective: merchant builder, long-term investor, and capital markets economist.
Christopher Macke (American Realty Advisors) will offer perspective on the state of the capital markets and macroeconomy. As Managing Director of Research and Strategy, Chris is responsible for leading the firm’s research efforts and working closely with the firm’s Investment and Portfolio Management Teams in developing investment analysis to support acquisitions and strategy implementation.
Martin Caverly (Resource RE, former CEO of EVOQ) will offer perspective from the investor standpoint. During the last downturn, Martin took over the Meruelo Maddux portfolio after it filed for bankruptcy protection in 2009. After changing the name to EVOQ, Martin and his team set out to financially right the company by selling nonessential properties and focusing on the 32-acre Alameda Square development, now known as ROW DTLA. EVOQ sold to Atlas Capital & Square Mile Capital Management in 2014 for $357 million.
Tony Cardoza (CityView) will provide perspective as a developer and investor. Tony oversees Cityview’s acquisition group. He has been involved in the acquisition or development of over 3,800 Class A apartment units in urban infill areas located in major population centers. He has 19 years of experience in real estate investment and management. Light refreshments will be served.
