ULI-LA District Council Update: April 6, 2020
Please see our most recent update regarding virtual programming and our response to COVID-19.
April 29, 2020
On behalf of ULI-LA, please accept our thanks and appreciation for making the ULI-LA’s March 4, 2020 “Confronting the Land Use Challenges to Housing the Homeless” an overwhelming success.
While we have all been fully consumed over the past six weeks responding to the COVID-19 outbreak, we want to acknowledge our program of work focused on the pressing issue of homelessness in Los Angeles. The vulnerable population of homeless individuals in our city will remain critically impacted by the current COVID-19 crisis and the challenges that will remain long after the pandemic subsides.
In focusing on homelessness, our District Council recognizes the unique opportunity we have to provide expertise on land acquisition, housing, development, finance, land use, regulatory compliance, design, construction and development of shelters and supportive housing, including the creation of affordable housing. During our full day program we explored how real estate and land use professionals can successfully apply the complex disciplines and expertise of real estate development to address the homelessness crisis in the City of Los Angeles. Whether temporary shelters, bridge or permanent supportive housing, we learned that there is not a “one size fits all” sustainable solution to address the varied needs of those experiencing homelessness. We learned what’s working, what’s not, and what needs to change. We learned how to apply a deeper understanding of the demographics of those experiencing homelessness, and how to address those demands and begin to have a lasting impact.
We would like to share with you this White Paper prepared based on the content captured from the program entitled “7 Key Pillars of Understanding the Los Angeles Homeless Strategy” and the video link highlighting the program. We look forward to continuing to engage with you on this important topic.
