Challenges ULI-LA Members to Tackle Regional Challenges with Substantive Solutions
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (October, 2019) – ULI Los Angeles, a District Council of the Urban Land Institute (ULI), has named Kevork A. Zoryan its new Chair. Zoryan is managing director of Morgan Stanley Real Estate Investing in Los Angeles and a ten-year member of the ULI-LA Advisory Board and a Global Governing Trustee of the Urban Land Institute. Zoryan will lead ULI Los Angeles for a two-year period, succeeding Claire DeBriere.
ULI has been a key part of Zoryan’s professional life since the beginning of his career. “I am honored to help lead our vibrant, innovative Los Angeles District Council members with their remarkably diverse backgrounds and talents,” said Zoryan. “The way we interact with real estate is changing faster now than it has in my entire career, and ULI is a thought leader in that change. We plan to galvanize our membership to convene and engage in a substantive way on the many challenges and opportunities that face our community. We remain particularly focused on solutions for homelessness and attainable housing in the LA region,” he added.
Goal to Prioritize Homelessness Initiatives
Zoryan’s agenda for the ULI Los Angeles District Council remains focused on the many challenges and opportunities that face the greater Los Angeles community. Through ULI-LA’s Land Use Leadership committee, he plans to continue building upon the highly regarded work of the 2018 ULI Advisory Services Panel on Homelessness in the Los Angeles region, and plans to dig further into those solutions while also finding ways to collaborate with peer District Councils in the western US. ULI-LA’s Housing Council will continue to tackle the conversation on solutions for attainable housing.
Through the newly formed Innovation Committee, ULI-LA will seek new ways to lead the conversation on sustainability, mobility, technology and innovation in our industry. All ULI-LA committees and councils remain ready to convene and engage the membership and provide thought leadership across the spectrum of disciplines and perspectives, in an accessible and cross-collaborative way.
Seven Pillars of Los Angeles Homelessness Strategy
The Land Use Leadership Committee recently reported on “7 Key Pillars of Understanding the Los Angeles Homeless Strategy.” The report identified the elements that must be tackled for a comprehensive, city- and region-wide solution to the homelessness crisis. The major areas, each with its own list of salient components, are:
A multi-phased Work Plan will help further ULI Los Angeles District Council’s leadership in seeking solutions for the homelessness crisis. The first phase will focus on full-day sessions on “Best Practices and Lessons Learned,” to be documented as part of an overall ULI LA White Paper on Homelessness. The second phase will consist of sessions focused on creating an action plan based on the collective findings. ULI-LA has been coordinating with ULI’s West Coast District Councils of San Diego, Orange County, Sacramento, San Francisco, Portland/Seattle, and Vancouver towards sharing resources and strategies.
“ULI Los Angeles is currently completing a five-year strategic plan that will bring our big-picture goals and values into focus,” said Zoryan. “We seek solutions for how we can make ULI’s global organization more locally accessible to all its potential members. We seek to convene and engage our members in ULI’s mission of land use leadership” he added.
“At a time of a mounting crisis of homelessness, Kev Zoryan brings tremendous experience and understanding in the important role the District Council can play in providing leadership as we tackle this most pressing issue in our City,” said David P. Waite of Cox Castle Nicholson. “Kev’s expertise and insights will engage our members and the larger land use community to address the challenges of homelessness with thoughtful and impactful insights,” he added.
ULI Los Angeles will host a California Reception at ULI’s annual, international Fall Meeting, to be held September 18–21 in Washington, D.C., and attended by approximately 7,000 land-use leaders, including developers, finance executives, economic development specialists, architects, urban planners, property owners and managers, public officials and academics.
