Participate in the invigorating experience of UrbanPlan and become prepared to share your knowledge and passion for real estate development with the Los Angeles community!

    What is UrbanPlan:
    • UrbanPlan is an engaging interactive exercise in which participants learn the fundamental forces that affect development in their communities by answering an RFP with their team.
    • ULI Volunteers work with participant teams including community advocates, students and public officials who can have their eyes opened to the comprehensive perspectives surrounding real estate development
    • Teams experience challenging issues, private and public sector roles, complex trade-offs, and fundamental economics in play when proposing realistic land use solutions to vexing growth challenges.
    • UrbanPlan's goal is to demystify land-use dynamics and complexities and assist participants in becoming more effective citizens and professionals as they approach potential development in their communities.

    Upcoming UrbanPlan Opportunities:
    • Volunteer in a high school classroom this spring semester as a facilitator or city council member
    • Volunteer in 1 day work shop with public officials as a facilitator, city council member or team advisor (Opportunities are in planning to work with council offices and neighborhood councils)
    • Volunteer in 1 day work shop with community advocates as a facilitator, city council member or team advisor (Opportunity is in planning to work with Destination Crenshaw along the Crenshaw corridor – Tentative date Saturday, June 29th)

    What to Expect:
    • This free event for members will be an in-person, highly interactive session that will prepare you to volunteer an hour of your time at a future workshop for public officials, community advocates, or at a school.
    • Participants will be asked to complete an approximately 90 minute on-demand online pre-training to confirm their spot on the event roster.
    • As an UrbanPlan volunteer, you will be trained on how to guide a team through the redevelopment of the fictional town of Elmwood. By the end of the training, you will understand how to guide participant teams through building a site plan, doing a financial analysis, leveraging public/private partnerships, and presenting your proposal to the "Elmwood City Council."
