What investors are looking for and how they are impacting the Los Angeles economy

Chinese individuals and businesses (from Mainland China and Taiwan) are investing heavily in Los Angeles, both in commercial and residential properties.  They have purchased some of the largest available development sites in downtown LA (Metropolis Site and Fig Central Site), and are buying up single family homes in residential land tracts in other communities.

This panel is made up of professionals who are working directly with Chinese investors on these key projects, and will focus on the challenges of working with Chinese investors, in terms of site selection, due diligence, land use entitlements, and permitting for new construction.  It will also review trends in the Chinese investment marketplace, including the outlook for the next few years.


Gregory Karns, Cox, Castle & Nicoholson, LLP
Greg Karns is a partner at Cox, Castle & Nicholson, one of the largest real estate law firms in the country, where he manages the firm’s Pacific Rim Group. For over thirty years, international investors, lenders, and developers from Greater China and Asia have depended on Greg’s broad expertise in real estate acquisitions and finance, construction and development, and entity structure and joint venture negotiation. Greg’s clients range from large international institutions to more entrepreneurial private companies.  Over his career he has worked on an extensive array of commercial real estate investment, development, and loan transactions.

Craig Lawson, Craig Lawson & Co., LLC
Craig Lawson is President of Craig Lawson & Co., LLC, which provides professional land use and zoning consulting services including due diligence research, pre-development feasibility analysis, preparation and processing land use entitlement applications (i.e. variances, conditional use permits, zone changes, subdivisions), compliance, and government relations. Mr. Lawson is presently working on the Metropolis project ($1 billion mixed use development at 8th & Francisco) and several other projects which are being financed by Chinese investors.

John Eichler, Cushman & Wakefield
John M. Eichler joined Cushman & Wakefield’s Los Angeles office in 1984 after graduating from the University of California at Berkeley. During the past 30 years, Mr. Eichler has been one of the top broker/advisors within the greater Downtown Los Angeles region, specializing in property sales, land-development sales, and leasing advisory on behalf of landlords and tenants. Most notably, Mr. Eichler has been the foremost advisor/broker of land-development properties in Downtown. His many iconic transactions include the 655 unit Medici multifamily project, the 35-story, 265 unit Watermarke residential tower, and the soon to be developed 1.5 million square-foot mixed use high rise development site at Fig Central.
