The Center of It All

Everything seems to be happening in Downtown Los Angeles and the Arts District: high rise offices, condo towers, new restaurants, hotels and galleries, adaptive re-use of warehouses into creative work spaces, and new challenges, including the construction of the Downtown Connector, the continued growth of the homeless populations and the question of gentrification. ULI Los Angeles is pleased to present a Meet and Greet with the man in the middle of all this action: Los Angeles City Councilmember Jose Huizar. For well over a decade, the Councilmember has represented District 14, which includes all of Downtown and the Arts District, as well as Boyle Heights and the northeast corner of the City.

Councilmember Huizar has steadfastly helped revitalize Downtown Los Angeles by increasing and reimagining its public spaces and promoting its economic and residential growth. Through his 10-year Bringing Back Broadway initiative, Councilmember Huizar assisted in the historic preservation of the beautiful corridor, reinvigorated 6 of its 12 historic theaters, and has created a framework to bring the beloved streetcar back to the City of Los Angeles. Councilmember Huizar has received numerous awards and distinctions, including profiles by the Los Angeles Business Journal as one of the 25 figures in the Los Angeles Area that “stand out for their potential to shape lives” and by Hispanic Business Magazine as one of the “100 most influential Hispanics” in the United States.

To hear about the Councilmember’s unique perspective on Downtown’s revitalization and his outlook for the future, ULI will be holding this event in a unique space: JERDE’s brand new offices in the beautifully restored California Edison Building in the heart of downtown Los Angeles.  This reinvigorated 1931 space now occupied by an established business that moved from the suburbs into the heart of the City is an ideal location for this event.
