June 11 ULI LA concluded another successful year of UrbanPlan with the Closing Ceremony at The Alhambra Theater. The ULI LA UrbanPlan finals were conducted on June 4 at West Angeles Church in South Los Angeles. The in-school judging took place on May 28 and 29 at the participating high schools.

The Best Overall UrbanPlan team this year was Cleveland HS iGreen. Each of the team members won a $1,000 college scholarship from ULI LA.

The Best Written Report award went to Birmingham HS Neighborhoods Dream, Inc., and each team member won a $500 college scholarship from ULI LA.

Best Oral Presentation went to Cleveland HS Lakeside Redevelopment and each team member won a $500 college scholarship.

Honorable Mention went to Kennedy HS Vista and each team member won a $250 college scholarship from ULI LA.

Cheviot Hills High School and Mark Keppel High School received Finalist Vote of Confidence Award and each student received a $100 college scholarship.

ULI LA started the competition with 23 teams and over 150 high school students, so congratulations are in order for the top four winning teams. Each of these teams responded to an RFP to redevelop the Santa Barbara Plaza site in South Los Angeles.

About UrbanPlan

UrbanPlan is a simulation classroom exercise for high school students created by the Urban Land Institute. Students work in development teams to analyze and respond to a hypothetical "Request for Proposal" for the redevelopment of a specific urban area. Development teams compete to secure the rights from a fictitious city council made up of UrbanPlan volunteers. During the annual awards ceremony, the winning team is announced and presented with scholarships towards their college education.

Over the course of the exercise, local land use professionals interact with the students on a regular basis. As "facilitators" in the classroom, they challenge the students to think more critically about the UrbanPlan issues and the specific responsibilities of the students assigned roles as finance directors, marketing directors, city liaisons, neighborhood liasions, and site planners.
