Shining a Light on City Spending Ron Galperin - High Res 4489 (1)

Join ULI Los Angeles to meet Ron Galperin, Controller of the City of Los Angeles.

The City of Los Angeles spends over $20 billion each year.  Where are they spending all that money?  How could anyone possibly expect to understand what they are doing?  Enter Ron Galperin, City Controller since July 2013.  It’s his job to the mind the store, and it’s a very big store.  As Controller, Ron oversees a team responsible for conducting independent audits of City departments, managing payroll for more than 42,000 City employees, disbursing 290,000 payments to outside vendors, and preparing comprehensive reports on the City’s finances, including its $49 billion in assets and $28 billion in liabilities.

Sometimes his job simply illuminates facts that can allow the City and the taxpayer to identify where government priorities really are, so that more effective decisions can be made.  Other times, his job requires him to reveal unpleasant information, potentially making some inside City government uncomfortable.

That’s probably why The Los Angeles Times made this one of their New Year wishes for 2015:

Some aggressive critiquing of Los Angeles city government by Controller Ron Galperin. The cooperation among top city leaders is a welcome change from the customary sniping, but there’s a place for scrutiny and oversight, and Galperin’s the person to carry out that job.

Ron is a lawyer by training and experience, but he comes to Citywide office with a record of citizen involvement.  Ron served as a Neighborhood Council member, and in that role he took on responsibilities outside the confines of his own community when he taught the “Government 101” course to new Council members.  He also has served as Chair of the Los Angeles City Commission on Revenue Efficiency (CORE).

We hope you can join us on Thursday, February 19, to hear what this new voice in City leadership has to say about the financial state of the City.  And feel free to check out his website if you want to see more in advance of our program: http://controller.lacity.org/index.htm.
